November is Prematurity Awareness Month

Here’s what I read in The American Academy of Pediatrics.

Chicago - Citing premature birth as the number one killer of American newborns, the March of Dimes has named November as Prematurity Awareness Month to draw attention to this increasingly common, costly and serious public health problem.

Between 1981 and 2003, the rate of premature births rose from 9.4 percent to 12.3, an increase of almost 31 percent. Every year nearly 500,000 infants are born prematurely. That’s roughly comparable to the population of Cleveland.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is a partner in the March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign to fund research and education aimed at reducing prematurity by 15 percent.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.

To read the stories of mothers (families) with premature babies, please have a look at here ….

- Diana, whose Princess was born 7 weeks earlier.
- Jen, a severe preeclampsia survivor and two time NICU mom
- Jen3@AmazingTriplets, mom to three beautiful babies: William, Elizabeth & Carolyn
- Jill, whose youngest daughter was born 7 1/2 weeks early due to placental abruption
- Ashlee, Xav’s mama..

My pray is always with all of you, mamas ….
