Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
When I first looked at the cover, I fell in love with this book. The color is so attractive and girly.
I bought it as a gift for my 14 year-old niece for her birthday. I try to always give books as gifts.
My niece seems to like not only the cover but also the story. She told me that she liked Stargirl and Leo–the boy who falls for Stargirl. She said that Stargirl was a very attractive unusual girl.
“You know, what…she plays ukulele and sang happy birthday to everyone on their birthday,” said my niece with excitement.
So I borrowed the book from her to check out what’s so special about this girl, Stargirl a.k.a Susan.
She is special. She wears long skirts. She has a pet rat named Cinamon. She doesn’t wear makeup. She’s different.
But, even if she’s nothing alike to other ‘normal’ girls, she’s still enjoying her life at her new high school, Mica High School–after 15 years of homeschooling. That’s what I like so much about this book.
The message that the writer, Jerry Spinelli, is trying to send throught this novel is the encouragement to be unique despite the pressures at high school. Be yourself and somehow you’ll fit in.
It’s a good book for your teens at home, especially for those who feel different from others.
