I bought one of those, and it was a total waste of money. I even tried it on my due date, and still couldn’t hear a thing. What did work was a doppler from BabyBeat.com. Worked like a charm from about 12 weeks on.

You can hear once they are 30 weeks for sure, however they don’t tell you that using ultrasound is dangerous for babies. Your transferring sound waves (BIG, LOUD) sound waves into your babies safe little home in your uterus. Thats’ how you get the vibration back.
Ask your doctors, they say not to do it. Not only can it possibly hurt your baby - doing it too often, but if you can’t hear them sometimes it can cause unnecessary worry. Sometimes depending on the position, you can’t hear them well and your doctors don’t want that either. You’re much better off sticking to the regular check ups. Congratulations on your little miracle!

Hello,
I bought one of those battery powered ones and let me tell you!….I never knew how much noise goes on inside. That is about all I could hear. I would use it nearly everyday and never heard anything but last nights dinner. Finally 2 days before I gave birth I heard my baby’s heart, mostly due to the fact her back was facing my stomach and the listening device was probably an inch away from her heart. It made it all worth it when I finally did, but it was frustrating to wait that long! : )

i asked my dr. about those when i first found out i was pregnant, he said it was a waste of money. i didn’t care, i bought one anyway. i listened religiously everynight… it wasn’t till 29weeks that i could hear the bb and it took 20 minutes to find the heartbeat! anyway it works, i got it at walmart. just don’t be too excited cuz it wasn’t until the third trimester that i could hear it.

By 21 weeks you will be feeling your baby move all the time. That is a much more reliable way of knowing everything is ok than using a listening device.

I bought one with my first baby and it was a complete waste of money. This was back in 1997 so I don’t know if it was just that they were coming out and they havent perfected them yet. All I know is that I spent alot of money at Baby Depot on it and I was NEVER able to get a heartrate on him, not even at the end. They said it was one that you could hook to a cassette recorder and I really wanted to do that so I could record it and save it for him and I was very very VERY disapointed!

Yes i have 1. I bought it at 25 weeks and could hear the babys heart beat but it was very faint. Im now 29 weeks and can hear the heartbeat louder. Mines a summer listening device. You can get them from ebay for cheap prices, i bought mine from tkmaxx for £15.99. Usual selling price is £29.99. Hope this helps.

we bought one used, off ebay (because i didn’t want to “waste” full retail price) and the woman i bought it from said it worked for her. My hubby and i tried it several times… I never heard anything but my own heartbeat, even when i felt my baby kick the monitor on my tummy…. My hubby said he heard her once, but I just think he heard my tummy grumble or something and thought it was the baby…. In my personal opinion, the only way those things are considered to work is because people *think* its the baby they’re hearing, but its really something else…. oh, and we tried it first at 30 weeks, and then tried it once a week for the following 10 weeks… even the day before my baby was born, I tried it and still couldnt hear her, and she was moving all over the place…. so if you want to try it, try to buy one used for about half price of the ones at the store…. everyone tried to warn me before i bought mine that they are a waste of money, but i didn’t listen….

Hi,
we bought a prenatal listener last week on-line that said you could hear baby from 10 weeks. I’m 15 weeks and when we got it actually said you can only hear from the 3rd trimester. All we could hear was the traffic outside but as you’re further along than me you might be lucky enough to hear bubba
We bought an ultrasound Doppler instead and that works like magic just like when you’re at the doctors. They’re more expensive but it has given us peace of mind.
P.S if you do buy a prenatal listener make sure it’s quiet. And be patient you know babies love to play hard to get
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!x

hello, i got two and i found them really hard work i could only hear bumps and knocks sometimes i thought i heard a heart beat but couldnt be sure, it deffinately wasnt like when you visit the midwife, i found it really fustrating but it has something to do with how yr baby is lying and i guess i wasnt lucky so it was a bit of a waste of money

I bought the least expensive one that Wal-mart carried and it actually worked great. I thought it was a great little tool to have, because I could listen anytime I wanted.

Hi, i had one of those ones with my 1st 2 pregnancies and i didnt pick up anything but my tummy rumbling until after 30 weeks! i decided to get a proper doppler for this pregnancy and bought one from ebay for £50. I first picked up babys HB from 9+5 weeks and it was fantastic until i was listening at 17 weeks and the HB dropped right down to 58bpm for a couple of mins! i was so freaked out that i called my Mw who told me to stop listening. I asked about it at my scan and the scan lady said it can happen as their organs are still very immature at that stage and not to worry too much about it. I now feel baby move every day so i feel reassured by that. Im not saying “dont buy on” im just saying that if you do, a) get a decent one that uses gel not just a microphone one and b) when you are listening to the HB, dont listen for too long at any one time as every little change will panic you. Good luck though and congratulations on your pregnancy x
