FOOD & NUTRITION

Calcium and Your Kids

” The best way to get calcium is by consuming foods that naturally contain calcium. ”

by Adwina Jackson

What’s so essential for your children’s bones and dental health?

It’s C – A – L – C – I – U – M. Yes, calcium, one of macro minerals needed in a large amount by the body.

This main mineral has several important functions. It is responsible in forming healthy bones and teeth. It also functions in controlling muscles contractions and relaxations, as well as transmitting messages through the nerves.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends adequate intake of calcium as shown in the table below:

Male and Female Age

Calcium (mg/day)

0 to 6 months

210

7 to 12 months

270

1 to 3 years

500

4 to 8 years

800

9 to 13 years

1300

14 to 18 years

1300

The best way to get calcium is by consuming foods that naturally contain calcium. A great variety of food can be your choices to provide in your children’s daily intake.

Below is the food list:

- yogurt, plain or mixed with fruit
- sardines
- cheddar cheese
- milk
- tofu
- salmon
- spinach
- broccoli
- soybean

If your children do not get adequate amount of calcium, they’ll suffer from a deficiency in three elements essential for maximizing the calcium absorption. They are magnesium (Mg), vitamin D, and vitamin C. Thus, a glass of orange juice is a great idea to improve the absorption.

Meanwhile, soft drinks, coffee and alcohol do the other way. If you have teens, beware with what they consume. They probably prefer those drinks instead of milk, which of course high in calcium.

Calcium deficiency can lead to osteoporosis later in life. It happens when dietary intake of calcium is low. The body then takes away so much calcium from the skeleton, and the bones will become weak and fragile.

However, getting too much calcium is not a good idea as well. Constipation is one of the effects.

As the last part, take a look at the following points:

• If your child has a balanced diet, he or she may not need supplements of vitamins or minerals.

• Consult with a doctor first if you want to give those supplements to your child.

• Go to your child’s pediatrician for a routine check-up of his or her development.

BABIES

They Learned It in the Womb!

Some researches show that the learning point can even be started while a baby is still spending days in the womb.

But how do we, parents, help them learn?

STORY TELLING. Buy some books and read them with different kinds of tone. Besides helping them get familiar with your voice, it also can trigger your baby to love books.

MUSIC. Your baby’s movements are livelier when music is played. And it can stimulate your baby’s brain.

BELLY TOUCHING. Touch or scrub your belly gently, the baby can feel it and will be more comfortable afterwards.

So, moms, in whichever months your pregnancy is, it’s never too late to do those three things above…

Nice try!

Dinner Blessing

A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?”

“I wouldn’t know what to say,” the girl replied.

“Just say what you hear Mommy say,” the wife answered.

The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”

What You Need to Know about Your Child’s Asthma

” Always prepare for proper medications anytime. If you don’t have any when the attacks strike, go to the emergency room right away to get an immediate treatment. ”

by Adwina Jackson

You’ve noticed lately that your child coughs, wheezes, and has trouble in breathing. Frequent coughs during the night also add up your worry.

The symptoms above may indicate that your child has asthma. It’s a very common disease in babies and children.

When you child gets asthma, the tubes that bring air to the lungs are irritated and swollen. This condition affects your child to breathe. You may find that your child makes a whistle sound when he or she breathes.

How to tell if your child has asthma?

It might be difficult to determine this. But if he or she coughs frequently, your family has asthma and allergy history, and your or your spouse has them too, there’s a big chance that your child gets asthma either.

How to prevent asthma attacks?

1. Avoid asthma attacks by keeping your child away from the allergens, which are the triggers of the disease. Dust, mold, pollen, air pollution, tobacco smoke, strong emotions, sinus infections, spray-on deodorants, cold air, and viral infection are among these allergens.

2. Prevent your child from stuffed animals, carpets, and anything that can catch dust.

3. If you have a fireplace, try to avoid it, too. The smoke can annoy your child’s respiration.

4. Keep your child inside the house if the weather or the air is not good.

5. Let your child join in normal activities, but not hard exercises.

How to treat it?

Using nebulizer is a common medication for asthma patients. Use it as directed by your pediatrician or asthma specialist.

He may also prescribe drugs to stop an attack, which make your child breathes easier. These ones are called quick-reliever.

Or, another kind of drugs, known as controllers, will be prescribed to prevent an attack. Your doctor may help you decide which is best for your child.

Always prepare for proper medications anytime. If you don’t have any when the attacks strike, go to the emergency room right away to get an immediate treatment.

If not treated well, or if it’s delayed, asthma can lead to a fatal condition. So, above all, communicate with the doctor on how to build a plan to prevent and deal with asthma attacks.

TEENS

Good Study Habits for Your Teens

Some parents can find difficulties to let their children study. One of the solutions is to set up several rules for them for a better study habit.

Here are some tips:

Turn off the TV set – TV is commonly the biggest temptation for your teens while they’re at home. When it comes to study times, turn the TV off so they will concentrate on their study or homework. However, let a radio or a music player on as sometimes it can help your teens absorb the lessons.

Choose a special are for studying – This place should be at a minimum level of distraction. It could be your teens’ room or any other places in the house as long as it has a table to support their learning activities. Keep equipments, such as pencils, pens, and papers on hand every time your teens need them.

Notice the signs of frustration – When you see your teens show a sign of weariness, it’s best to stop the study. An uncomfortable situation can cause them lose their enthusiasm to the study. They can start it again when they’re relaxed.

Organic Food for a Better Environment and Health

” Organic food is produced by farmers to emphasize renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. ”

by Adwina Jackson

You must have heard about organic food, haven’t you? What do you know about it?

Imagine if your spinach, broccoli, carrots, celery, apples, oranges, pears, and other fruits and vegetables on your table do not contain chemical substances. A healthier body will be yours ever.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), organic food is produced by farmers to emphasize renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.

This food is produced and processed without using any synthetic ingredients or chemical substances which can disrupt the balance of nature.

Do you know what that means? Yes, organic food production is better for our environment.

Meanwhile, organic meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products are produced by not using growth hormones and antibiotics. Wow, that’s supposed to be healthy and safe for your body.

Consuming organic food is indeed an investment to a healthier life in the future. Making it a daily menu for the family is a healthful idea as well.

What is the standard of organic food?

The USDA has established a set of national standard that “organic” labeled food must meet.

One of them is the farm condition, whether it follows the rules necessary to meet the USDA organic standards. For instance, there must be no prohibited substance for 3 years on land.

Certification to the companies that process or handle the organic food before it reaches local supermarkets or restaurants is also required.

How to tell if certain food is organic? See a label on the food package or watch for signs in the supermarket.

Costly, yet healthy

Unfortunately, you may find that organic food is rather more expensive from non-organic one. One of the reasons is organic food needs more farmers to handle the production as they weed, for example carrots and onions, by hand.

So it’s clear than consuming organic food is not simply about eating. Again, it is a future asset. Not only is it beneficial for our environment but also for our health, our family’s health.

Observing Your Children’s Health through their Fingers

Sometimes, you are too busy to take your children to the pediatricians for a routine control. However, you need to monitor their health on a daily basis.

Fingers can be very helpful in discovering unhealthiness in your children’s body. If the fingers are:

  • Getting dark blue: your children may have a problem in their heart or lungs
  • Yellowish: might be an indication of liver problem or hepatitis
  • Some red some white: could be a sign of problem in the kidney
  • Having small white lines: might be a symptom of lack of zinc

Consult your pediatricians if your children have any of the above. However, first of all, make sure that they haven’t just colored their fingers!

    Things To Do Today

If you really care about your environment, having your choice to organic food is a very good decision.

    How to Treat Baby’s Diarrhea

    by Adwina Jackson

Diarrhea is one of common problems found in babies. Some parents get panicked if their baby gets diarrhea, especially if it lasts for several days, and even weeks.

How to tell if your baby gets diarrhea?

It’s normal for newborns to have about 10 bowel movements a day. However, you need to be alert if the stools increase two times than usual. In addition, diarrhea comes with watery and looser stools than regular ones.

What you need to be concerned about diarrhea is to watch the signs of dehydration in your baby. Dehydration means losing fluids more than one’s taking in. Some signs of dehydration are urinate less frequently, cry with no tears, lose weight, and have a dry mouth.

” Some signs of dehydration are urinate less frequently, cry with no tears, lose weight, and have a dry mouth. “

If you see these signs in your baby, you must treat her by giving as much fluid as you can. You can give either breast milk or formula (if your baby is not more than 6 months old). Water and soup are other alternatives for older babies.

There are also special fluids designed to replace water and salts lost during your baby’s diarrhea. According to American Academy of Pediatrics, these fluids are very useful in home management of mild to fairly severe illnesses.

However, you should not prepare these fluids by yourself because you may make bad liquids for you baby, which of course can worsen her condition. You can easily get the fluids in nearby pharmacies.

When should you take your baby to a doctor?

You should take her see a doctor if these conditions below occur:

    - You find blood in your baby’s feces. This can be a sign of bacterial infection.

    - There are changes in your baby’s behavior, like she cries most of the time and you can’t calm her down or she refuses to eat and drink.

    - Your baby has a high fever, which is above 39°C.

Nonetheless, no need to be worried if:

    - your baby acts normally as usual.

    - your baby has no fever.

    - your baby still wants to eat.

Generally, diarrhea recovers by itself without medicine. You just need to be patient and not to worry too much. Always observe your baby’s condition and examine whether her feces get solid or not and whether there’s blood in them.

The key is to keep give her as much fluid as you can. If she refuses, try to give the drink in small amount but do it frequently.

    Things To Do Today

If your baby has diarrhea, be alert of the signs of dehydration. Giving any fluid is the best treatment in order to recover her body after losing fluids and salts during the illness.

Yoga and Pregnancy - Why Do Yoga At This Time?

    by Lisa Askem

Yoga is for everyone, any age, men, women and children but is especially helpful at times of change in our lives. Pregnancy is a time when extra care should be taken not only in exercise classes but in all activities and living. Yoga will help maintain a healthy and strong body during all stages of pregnancy and help women to deliver their babies in a confident way.

Pregnancy is a natural time for taking care of yourself. For a first time mother a yoga class will offer a chance to be comfortable in the changes taking place both physically and mentally. A chance to take a break, relax into the pregnancy and make contact with her baby. Yoga will also help prevent all kinds of back problems. It will help to keep blood pressure low, prevent cramps, varicose veins, it will improve circulation and prevent swelling of the joints. Breathing will improve and tiredness will be overcome, good sleep will be induced.

“For a first time mother a yoga class will offer a chance to be comfortable in the changes taking place both physically and mentally. “

The practise of yoga will also maintain a sense of self in a time of change. Postures will be taught with encouragement and ideas to help deliver babies confidently and often without intervention. Yoga can help with anxiety around the birth and possible depression.

Many mothers come to classes as beginners with no experience of yoga but have seen articles on how beneficial it is in helping to give birth naturally. Maternity classes use modified yoga postures with the emphasis on breathing, strengthening and relaxation. Applicable to all stages of pregnancy. For those who already practise yoga a maternity class will provide many tips on how to continue yoga safely during pregnancy.

I believe we should train to have a baby. You wouldn’t climb a mountain or run a marathon without training first, and there is also the other side to yoga - it is a mind and body practice. The postures will keep the body strong but the meditative side of yoga is vital. The transition into motherhood has to be addressed. We live in a culture where we have babies and rush back to work or put a wash on and go to the supermarket. There is an expectation that believes we will not change. Yoga can be part of the rite of passage into motherhood helping to prepare for the changes ahead.

    Children’s Health

Common Childhood Illnesses… What to Look For

    by Adwina Jackson

Children are very susceptible to illnesses, in part because their
immune systems are not fully mature.

Breastfeeding of course provides some immunity to common
illnesses, but nowadays most children are weaned by the time they
    are 1 year old.

Children also have a habit of exploring the world around them
with their mouths and their hands. Anything that comes into contact
with their mouth and hands can potentially cause an illness.

The good news is that the more your child is exposed the stronger
their immune systems will become, and their ability to fight off
    infection in the future.

Some of the most common childhood illnesses and symptoms are
    listed below:

Colds/Cough – Cold and coughs are usually caused by viral
infections, thus must be spread by person to person contact, not
through the weather alone. Common symptoms of a cold include a
stuffy nose, cough, possible sore throat and occasionally a
temperature. Colds can become more severe and result in bronchitis,
pneumonia and ear infections. Signs that a cold is becoming worse
and may need medical treatment include green or yellow nasal
discharge, fever lasting more than one day, and or a persistent and
    wheezy cough.

    Most
illnesses are spread when a child touches something the virus
has settled on and then touches their face. “

Flu – The flu is characterized by headaches, chills,
muscle aches and a high fever. Respiratory symptoms may also
develop, and a feeling of fatigue which may last for several weeks
after initial symptoms. The flu is also spread from person to person
contact usually with respiratory secretions of someone who is sick.
Antibiotics can’t treat the flu. Treatment often consists of rest
    and fluids.

Ear Infections – This is perhaps the most common infection
affecting children. Ear infections happen when bacteria enter the
ear from the nose or throat. Usually an ear infection is accompanied
by a fever and possibly pus draining from the ear. Symptoms may
include pain, fever, dizziness and irritability. Though ear
infections aren’t contagious, the viral infections that cause them
are. Some children will develop repetitious ear infections, usually
associated with a problem with the tube that passes between the
    throat and the middle ear.

Chicken Pox – Chicken pox is probably the most common
infectious disease that affects preschool and school age children.
Symptoms usually include an itchy rash and blisters, sometimes
coupled with a fever. Chicken pox can also be transmitted to adults,
and is usually a much more serious illness. The good news is a
chicken pox vaccine is available for babies 1 year of age or older.

One of the best things you can do to help your child is try to
minimize their exposure to illness by encouraging frequent hand
    washing.

Most illnesses are spread when a child touches something the
virus has settled on and then touches their face.

Practicing good habits at home will help encourage your child to
limit their exposure and the spread of illness to other family
    members.

    Things To Do Today

Preventing is better than curing. Always carry out healthy habits
anywhere. Tell the kids to wash their hands after doing their
activities. This simple habit leads to a healthy body.

According to Minnesota Department of Health, proper hand-washing
eliminates nearly half of all cases of foodborne illness and
significantly reduce the spread of the common cold and flu.

    Top Ten Activities for
    Toddlers

    by Adwina Jackson

Children learn everything about the world through exploration and play.

Playtime is also a great time for you to bond with your children in a
special and unique way. Almost any activity can be considered an opportunity
to help your toddler learn and grow.

Even the most mundane tasks, something like vacuuming, can be an exciting
and educational activity that your little one will enjoy and learn from. The
key is encouraging your toddler to explore the world around them.

Children afford us the opportunity to see the world through fresh eyes.
Even something as common as the wind can be exciting and stimulating for a
    toddler.

If you are not sure what you should be doing to entertain your toddler,
you might be surprised at the list of things that actually are the most
entertaining for children of all ages!

Stimulating your child’s senses is important, so it is critical that you
expose them to as wide a range of activities as possible throughout the day,
    week, month and year.

The more different the activities you engage in, the more opportunities
your children will have to learn about the world they live in.

Here are the top ten activities you can engage in with your toddler to
help them learn about their world and develop each of their senses:

    1. Blow Bubbles together and
    chase them.

    2. Play peek-a-boo.

    3. Make up a song and sing it
    together.

    4. Visit the bookstores, pick out
a new book and sit down and read it while still there.

    5. Go for a walk and explore all
the different plants and trees you pass by.

    6. Create an obstacle course out
    of furniture.

    7. Go on a scavenger hunt
    together.

    8. Have your toddler put on a
    puppet show.

    9. Turn on some music and dance
    together.

    10. Bake cookies together.

Honestly, this list is just a small sampling of the hundreds of things
you can do with your toddler to keep them active, to help them develop, and
    to encourage bonding.

Just about anything and everything you do during the day is a possible
    activity for your toddler.

You might even consider having your toddler help you fold the laundry.
The best way to encourage your toddler to learn while engaging in play is to
make every activity fun, new and exciting in some way.

Another great way toddlers learn is through interaction. If you haven’t
got the time, dedicate at least one day per week to group activities.

Take your toddler to the park and allow them to explore the world with
other children, so they can learn through other’s eyes as much as through
    their own.

Remember when it comes to children. The world is their playground. You
simply need to guide them through it!

    Things
    To Do Today

There are actually simple, daily activities you can take your children to
play with. No need to buy expensive toys. Keep them active, help them
develop, and enjoy your beautiful bonding!
