FOOD & NUTRITION

Calcium and Your Kids

” The best way to get calcium is by consuming foods that naturally contain calcium. ”

by Adwina Jackson

Whats so essential for your childrens bones and dental health?

Its C A L C I U M. Yes, calcium, one of macro minerals needed in a large amount by the body.

This main mineral has several important functions. It is responsible in forming healthy bones and teeth. It also functions in controlling muscles contractions and relaxations, as well as transmitting messages through the nerves.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends adequate intake of calcium as shown in the table below:

Male and Female Age

Calcium (mg/day)

0 to 6 months

210

7 to 12 months

270

1 to 3 years

500

4 to 8 years

800

9 to 13 years

1300

14 to 18 years

1300

The best way to get calcium is by consuming foods that naturally contain calcium. A great variety of food can be your choices to provide in your childrens daily intake.

Below is the food list:

- yogurt, plain or mixed with fruit
- sardines
- cheddar cheese
- milk
- tofu
- salmon
- spinach
- broccoli
- soybean

If your children do not get adequate amount of calcium, theyll suffer from a deficiency in three elements essential for maximizing the calcium absorption. They are magnesium (Mg), vitamin D, and vitamin C. Thus, a glass of orange juice is a great idea to improve the absorption.

Meanwhile, soft drinks, coffee and alcohol do the other way. If you have teens, beware with what they consume. They probably prefer those drinks instead of milk, which of course high in calcium.

Calcium deficiency can lead to osteoporosis later in life. It happens when dietary intake of calcium is low. The body then takes away so much calcium from the skeleton, and the bones will become weak and fragile.

However, getting too much calcium is not a good idea as well. Constipation is one of the effects.

As the last part, take a look at the following points:

If your child has a balanced diet, he or she may not need supplements of vitamins or minerals.

Consult with a doctor first if you want to give those supplements to your child.

Go to your childs pediatrician for a routine check-up of his or her development.

BABIES

They Learned It in the Womb!

Some researches show that the learning point can even be started while a baby is still spending days in the womb.

But how do we, parents, help them learn?

STORY TELLING. Buy some books and read them with different kinds of tone. Besides helping them get familiar with your voice, it also can trigger your baby to love books.

MUSIC. Your babys movements are livelier when music is played. And it can stimulate your babys brain.

BELLY TOUCHING. Touch or scrub your belly gently, the baby can feel it and will be more comfortable afterwards.

So, moms, in whichever months your pregnancy is, its never too late to do those three things above

Nice try!

Helping Your Child Deal with the Birth of a New Sibling

” Discuss the baby in terms of how important the older sibling will be in its life. This is your child’s chance to be the big kid, which is usually a very appealing idea. ”

by Sarah Veda

If you’re pregnant with your second child, it’s time to be thinking about how to prepare your first child to deal with “not being an only child” anymore. This can be a difficult transition for any child, and most, regardless of age, have some adjustments to make. Here are some suggestions to help your child be prepared.

  • Talk about how special it is to be a big brother or sister. Discuss the baby in terms of how important the older sibling will be in its life. This is your child’s chance to be the big kid, which is usually a very appealing idea.

  • If you’ve been thinking about putting your child into a preschool program, now is the time. Don’t wait until after the baby comes, or she might feel like you’re trying to get rid of her. She should have time to make friends and get adjusted before the baby comes, and then she will enjoy the chance to get away.

  • Get her used to being away from you. If your child spends most of her waking hours in your care, it’s time to start having someone else take over some of this time for you. Maybe start using a sitter a little more, or sending her to play at a friend’s. This way, when the baby starts to demand your attention, she will be accustomed to having other caretakers.

  • Don’t plan any major changes for her right after the baby is born. The adjustment to the baby is plenty, so don’t try potty training, or changing her sleeping arrangements during this time. If you can’t get these things accomplished before the baby comes, plan to put it off a few months.

  • Familiarize her with babies in general, particularly the amount of care they require. Talk to her about when she was a baby, and all the things that she did. Then when the new baby comes, she will have something to relate to.

  • Let her assist you with any baby preparations that she would like to help with, but don’t force her. She might think its fun to pick out nursery items, for example.

  • Prepare her for the time you’ll be spending in the hospital, and explain what the situation will be like. If you can make it special for her, so much the better. When my daughter was born, we had arranged for my four year old son’s favorite aunt and uncle to come and stay with him at our house while I was in the hospital. He was looking so forward to their visit; he hardly noticed I was away.

No matter how well you prepare your child, there is bound to be some difficulty in adjusting to the new baby. My son thought his little sister was cool, but he didn’t much care for the fact that I was her Mommy, too. It takes a little time, but things work out well in the end. And, anything you can do to prepare them ahead of time will only make the transition easier.

American health societies urge the importance of oral hygiene from an early age.

The earlier parents are cautious about their children’s dental health, the better.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry even recommend that a child should have his first visit to pediatric dentist as soon as his first ‘baby’ tooth appears.

You soon will be amazed by the new cheerful talkative little girl that she becomes.

What You Can Expect from 7 to 9-Months-Old Babies

” What you need to pay attention to is your baby’s developmental milestone. This means she should

be able to do certain things at particular ages. ”

    by Adwina Jackson

Now that your little angel has reached 7 months old. Time goes by so fast that you don’t realize your baby is now able to sit upright without your support or even her own hands. Wow, that must be an incredible feeling seeing her grow so instantly.

For parents of 7 to 9-months-old babies, what else can you find in their physical growths? Well, every baby is not the same. One may have earlier development from the others.

For example, your friend’s baby was able to start crawling when he was 8 months old, while yours could do it when she was seven and a half months.

On the other hand, the first baby started teething when he was 6 months old, whereas yours did it when she was 9 months.

So, you really need not to be anxious about your baby’s development. She will reach the stage.

What you need to pay attention to is your baby’s developmental milestone. This means she should be able to do certain things at particular ages.

It’s best for you to make some notes on your baby’s growth, such as writing all her new skills in an online diary. If you do not want to miss any of your baby’s growths, writing the journal will be very exciting.

Adding up cute photos when new things happen will also be a wonderful endeavor. Later on, you’ll thank yourself for keeping the memories online as you can see it anytime anywhere. Add up the joy by sharing the site to friends and families.

Now let’s go back to the previous topic. If you’re a first-time parent, you probably still have a little idea about your baby’s development.

Below is a milestone you can use as your guideline. If your baby isn’t on her track or doesn’t reach many of the stages mentioned here, you may consult it with your baby’s pediatrician.

Here are some of the milestones for 7 to 9-months-old baby:

    1. Sitting upright without support
    2. Crawling
    3. Teething
    4. Babbling
    5. Passing things from hand to hand
    6. Standing up by holding onto something
    7. Waving hands
    8. Clapping hands
    9. Turning heads when someone calls her
    10. Holding her bottles
    11. Picking objects up with pincer (thumb-finger) grasp
    12. Testing your responses to her behavior
    13. Able to distinguish people she knows and strangers
    14. Cruising while holding onto the wall or other furniture

The older your baby, the more skills she may have. If your baby is not able to do some of these things, don’t worry too much. It does not mean a problem. She’ll reach the phase in the perfect time, soon.

Calcium, Exercise Vital for Kids’ Bones

In early February, the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a report that national data show that most American children over age 8 do not get enough calcium. This increases the risks of developing osteoporosis in adulthood.

Doctors are also advised to evaluate the amount of calcium in children and encourage them to exercise.

    It’s All in Your Mind

You don’t think that you can be a good parent? That’s silly. Anyone can be, as long as they believe in it. All you need to do is just control your mind.

You need to assure yourself that you will be one otherwise it will be left as desire for the rest of your life. But sometimes assuring your own mind is not as simple as assuring others.

So, now, let’s get you assured. How?

Organic Food for a Better Environment and Health

” Organic food is produced by farmers to emphasize renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. ”

    by Adwina Jackson

You must have heard about organic food, haven’t you? What do you know about it?

Imagine if your spinach, broccoli, carrots, celery, apples, oranges, pears, and other fruits and vegetables on your table do not contain chemical substances. A healthier body will be yours ever.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), organic food is produced by farmers to emphasize renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.

This food is produced and processed without using any synthetic ingredients or chemical substances which can disrupt the balance of nature.

Do you know what that means? Yes, organic food production is better for our environment.

Meanwhile, organic meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products are produced by not using growth hormones and antibiotics. Wow, that’s supposed to be healthy and safe for your body.

Consuming organic food is indeed an investment to a healthier life in the future. Making it a daily menu for the family is a healthful idea as well.

What is the standard of organic food?

The USDA has established a set of national standard that “organic” labeled food must meet.

One of them is the farm condition, whether it follows the rules necessary to meet the USDA organic standards. For instance, there must be no prohibited substance for 3 years on land.

Certification to the companies that process or handle the organic food before it reaches local supermarkets or restaurants is also required.

How to tell if certain food is organic? See a label on the food package or watch for signs in the supermarket.

    Costly, yet healthy

Unfortunately, you may find that organic food is rather more expensive from non-organic one. One of the reasons is organic food needs more farmers to handle the production as they weed, for example carrots and onions, by hand.

So it’s clear than consuming organic food is not simply about eating. Again, it is a future asset. Not only is it beneficial for our environment but also for our health, our family’s health.

Observing Your Children’s Health through their Fingers

Sometimes, you are too busy to take your children to the pediatricians for a routine control. However, you need to monitor their health on a daily basis.

Fingers can be very helpful in discovering unhealthiness in your children’s body. If the fingers are:

  • Getting dark blue: your children may have a problem in their heart or lungs
  • Yellowish: might be an indication of liver problem or hepatitis
  • Some red some white: could be a sign of problem in the kidney
  • Having small white lines: might be a symptom of lack of zinc

Consult your pediatricians if your children have any of the above. However, first of all, make sure that they haven’t just colored their fingers!

    Things To Do Today

If you really care about your environment, having your choice to organic food is a very good decision.

    Worried About Bathing Your Newborn?

    by David Crowton

Are you about to be a parent and are having serious concerns about bathing your newborn? Afraid of the baby being all slippery and dropping him in the water? No need to feel embarrassed, these are concerns most new parents have when it comes to bathing their newborn babies because they are so small and seem so fragile.

When you first get over that initial scare of bathing your infant you will find that it can be fun and enjoyable for the both of you. There are some arguments over how fast you should give the baby a full bath after it is born. In the USA many specialists suggest not to give your child a full bath until the cord falls of but to only give it a sponge bath.

Having had children overseas where this belief is not followed you know that it is perfectly fine to give your child a full bath from the very beginning and that the cord is nothing to worry about when it comes to giving your baby a bath. The decision on how to give your baby its first few baths is completely up to you and what you feel the most comfortable doing.

” Prior to giving your baby a bath, be sure to have everything you need at hand, things such as soap, shampoo, sponge, washcloths and towels. “

In order to make it easier for you, getting a small baby tub may be a good idea since many of these tubs can be placed in the kitchen sink, on the counter or on a table. This way you don’t have to lie on your knees next to your bathtub plus it gives you a little more secure position to handle the baby. Many of the infant tubs also provide some sort of back support and are not very deep. Regardless of where you give your baby a bath you should not have too much water in the tub. Maximum 3 inches is recommended.

Before putting the baby in the tub make sure the water is not too hot and whatever you do fill the water in the tub before placing baby in it because if there are sudden changes in the water temperature it can easily leave burn marks on a little baby. If you find that your baby cries every time you give him a bath don’t be alarmed, it can take months before your baby actually starts to enjoy the water and having a bath.

Prior to giving your baby a bath, be sure to have everything you need at hand, things such as soap, shampoo, sponge, washcloths and towels. For no reason should you have to take your child out of the tub to go and grab something you forgot. You probably don’t like to get out of the tub until you are done either? It goes without saying that you never take both hands of your baby as long as he is in the water. It does not take much water for a baby to drown.

When all of this is said, get over your worries and just enjoy the bath time with your baby and when you feel comfortable enough you can even take a bath together with your baby.

    Whenever you are ready.

    Dear Friends,

This time I’d like to talk about separation anxiety in children. Infants to be exact.

How do I feel about my child’s separation anxiety? Honestly, it’s absolutely one of the most delightful feelings I really enjoy as a mom.

I remember when my son was between 8-9 months old. Just like every mother, I couldn’t forget those moments.

At that time, he often asked for more attention from me rather than from anybody in the house. No matter where he was or who was holding him, as soon as he saw me, he suddenly cried as if he was asking me to hold him.

Curious about my story? You can read more in Growth & Development section below. Enjoy!

In News segment, find out about the statistic and details about children in Michigan who become victims of abuse and neglect.

Love your child more and more everyday,

    About Baby’s Separation Anxiety
    by Adwina Jackson

How do I feel about my child’s separation anxiety? Honestly, it’s absolutely one of the most delightful feelings I really enjoy as a mom.

I remember when my son was between 8-9 months old. Just like every mother, I couldn’t forget those moments.

At that time, he often asked for more attention from me rather than from anybody in the house. No matter where he was or who was holding him, as soon as he saw me, he suddenly cried as if he was asking me to hold him.

When I came close to him, he abruptly opened his arms and looked so happy. His cry stopped in a moment. It was truly an unspoken feeling I had experienced.

” Separation anxiety is a phase in your child’s development during his early years of life. Almost all children go through this experience. “

But there was also time when he acted differently from what I had expected. When I went for work, I thought he would cry hard to see me leaving him. I hugged him tight and kissed his face again and again.

I told him, “Baby, Mommy have to go to work now. Eat and drink a lot, okay? And have a good nap. I’ll be back. Love you much. Bubye.”

Sometimes he kept looking at me when I said so. I expected him to start weeping. But it didn’t happen. I wondered why. I found out later that he was interested with the wheels of the car I traveled in everyday.

Whenever the car started to run, my son always kept his eyes on the wheels. Looking at them spinning must have been very exciting to him. I just smiled, though my heart broke a little. I soothed myself by thinking that it was good for him being curious of strange things.

My son is a baby who has sleeping problem. Throughout the night during his sleep, he often woke up several times. If he woke up and didn’t find me nearby, he would cry out loud, making the whole house panic as if something really bad happen.

When I got into the bedroom, he would crawl toward me, and then I hugged him. He’d be calm afterward. Breastfeeding really worked to put him back to sleep.

Thank God I decided to breastfeed him so that I wouldn’t be engaged with the rush of preparing formula during the night. Yes, I chose to breastfeed him in nighttimes, even though he still got formula in day times.

Maybe this breastfeeding activity had created the bond between us. I enjoyed it, and still until now. This might also what made my son didn’t want to stay away from me.

If your baby or child has the same characteristic as my son has, I’m sure you have the same feeling as I do. If you think that your baby’s cry (for being away from you) annoy you, just remember that it won’t last forever.

Separation anxiety is a phase in your child’s development during his early years of life. Almost all children go through this experience. What I can suggest you is just enjoy these intimate moments before they’re gone along with your child’s growth.

From what I’ve heard from my friends about this, you’re gonna miss the moments. To me, even now, I really don’t want the phase fade away.

Wait, wait. There’s one more thing I’d like to share with you, which you may not think will make your child comfortable. I remember my friend told me that if you’re going somewhere, don’t forget to tell your child that you’ll be back. Instead of sneaking out of the house, waving your hand and saying that you’ll be back will soothe him somehow.

    Things To Do Today

If you parents get angry, don’t take it out on your child. Take a moment to calm down and go away from the child. Hope this will prevent you from abusing your loved one.

5 Great Ways to Enrich Your Children’s Conscience
    by Adwina Jackson

Children are living with curiosity. They learn lots of things in life, gifted naturally with intuition, and open toward everything they find.

Everything seems to be interesting to them. That’s why they want to know about many things. It’s indeed a sign of good development.

Parents need to help children develop their conscience, which will be a great means of getting spiritual experiences. Through these, they’ll learn about self-esteem and moral values.

” Children are great imitators. It’s important for you to say and do nice things anytime anywhere. “

Of course parents want children have and familiar with good values in life. As parents, what can you do then? Here are 5 ways you can do to enrich their conscience:

Give good examples. What you say and do everyday reflect what you think about the world. If you say good stuff, your children will do the same. Children are great imitators. It’s important for you to say and do nice things anytime anywhere.

Listen when they talk. Sometimes your children ask questions that sound silly to adults, like “Mom, where does the sun sleep when the night comes?” Listen to them and answer seriously, “The sun doesn’t sleep. It shines in other places in the world.” By listening, children will feel that they get respect from their parents.

Show happiness. Show and share all the happiness and positive energy and thoughts with the children. If you’re happy, they’re happy too. By doing this, the children will learn that life is enjoyable.

Introduce them to nature. Tell them that all things happen in the world are connected to each other and that there’s a reason for it. For example, water is needed to irrigate plants and plants are food source for other living creatures.

Be flexible with your rules. Children should be informed about what they should do. However, always take notice on their development. There will be
time when they can decide what they want to do. By being flexible with your rules, children will stay cheerful and expressive.

Those 5 tips are actually easy to carry out. Just place yourself as your children’s parents and friends as well.

Again, remember that children are good imitators. Once you do or say something bad, there’s a great chance that they will do or say the same.

    Things To Do Today

Giving good examples to your children in anything you say and do everyday is indeed one of many simple ways of enriching their conscience.
