10 Tips for Teaching Your Child the True Meaning of Christmas

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

The true meaning of Christmas is sometimes crowded out by the frenzy of buying and gift giving. Our children are assaulted on all sides by the secular version of Santa Clause and the TV commercials showing them the latest toys and games. How can we teach our children the true meaning of Christmas, without taking away all the secular revelry?

One way to do that is to celebrate Advent. Advent traditionally starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Eve. The four weeks leading up to Christmas Day is considered advent. Each week has special verses that lead to Christmas Day.

Explain to your child that the gift of the baby Jesus is why we celebrate Christmas and give gifts to others.

Keep an advent calendar and as each day goes by, celebrate that special day with a favorite Bible verse, or Christmas Carol. The countdown to Christmas is visible and the reason for Christmas is reinforced daily.

When Christmas cards begin arriving, make them into an Advent wreath and use your prayer time to pray for the senders of the cards. This can instill in a child the need to pray for others, and to thank God for the gift of friends and family.

Engage your whole family in an Advent service project. Collect money or food to give to local charities that see an increased need at this time. Call the Salvation Army for names of families who need “adopted” for the Holiday. Encourage your child to share their good fortune by giving a gift to a child who is needy. Let your child see you donate to a church’s gift giving project, or send a special package to a missionary family.

The nativity set is also an important part of Christmas traditions. Let your child help set it up and tell them stories about the animals as you set them out.

Have a craft time when all the family gets together to make a craft that will be a new ornament on the tree or a new Christmas decoration they will treasure from year to year.

Sing the Christmas carols with your children. The songs of Christmas that we grew up with are still out there for us to enjoy with our children. Take them as a group to sing carols in a nursing home. Let your child pick out a small gift to give to the grandmas and grandpas, help them to wrap it and make it special for them. Give them a sense of giving and the good feeling it provides.

On Christmas Eve, we conclude the celebration of the Advent season. Prepare a nativity play, or put on your own nativity scene complete with little angels and your family pets as part of the scenery.

Christmas Day is an important time to instill in your child the true meaning of Christmas. Start with a prayer of thanks for the most wonderful gift of all, and have each of them say a word of thanks for another family member. Instead of rushing to drag the gifts from under the tree, prayer and family time will help your child realize that Christmas is about the greatest gift of all. The birth of Jesus

Building a Home

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Building a home is important. To build a home you need to do certain activities. If you want to improve the quality of family life you are spending you have to pay all due attention towards these things. These steps are minor steps, but these steps result in a much better level of understanding between the members of a family, and as a result the family becomes more strongly tied to each other.

If you want to become closer to your family you must know and learn to create a habit of eating together. It is obvious that all the members of the family cannot be there to eat together at the times of all meals. But what you can do is to make a habit of having dinner together with your family. In this way you will be able to spend time with your family and that will improve the situation. Similarly, it can be really helpful if you can have vacations together. Those parents who go for vacations with their kids along usually find it easier to deal with their kids during the daily grind. The experience the kids get by traveling and vacation brings them closer to their parents.

The actual purpose of doing all these things is to spend time together. If you spend more time with your family members you will be able to create a better level of understanding with them.

Why We Need to Celebrate Mother’s Day

Friday, May 16th, 2008

I know that Mother’s Day is already last week. But, let’s take a look of why we should celebrate Mother’s Day regularly, on the second Sunday of May, year after year.

Before we are going to the present Mother’s Day, let’s start by learning the history of Mother’s Day. Although not like the present form, Mother’s Day had been celebrated centuries back. It started with an annual festival to honor the goddess Isis (Mother of the Pharaohs) of Egypt, then continued with ancient Roman’s celebration of the Phrygian goddess Cybele, or Magna Mater (Great Mother), and Greek celebration of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. It evolved slowly, into European Mothering Day in 1600s, and up until taking the form of the present modern Mother’s Day. If we read carefully, the history is really interesting.

Then, why does everybody need to celebrate Mother’s Day? After 365 days of heavy duty motherhood, don’t you think that at least once in a year we specially show them how much we appreciate them? We can do a lot of things with our moms during Mother’s Day, from planning the perfect Mother’s Day to planning fun outings and trips with our moms. So, although we should show our mothers love everyday of the year, on just this one special day among our busy days we can give them our special appreciation.

Thursday 13 – 13 Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Adwina and I have just talked about what we are giving our Mom this Mother’s Day…so I think it would be nice to list what I (as a mother) would like to get from my kids (later when they grow up and decide to visit me on Mother’s Day)…
:)

  • Flowers (lots of them)
  • A beautiful frame with my picture with her/him, smiling beautifully
  • The latest, most modern gadgets
  • Books! (not just cooking books, but any books)
  • A lovely bag
  • A pendant with our photos in it
  • A gym voucher (to keep me healthy)
  • A mug saying “I love you, Mom” so I can remember her/him when I use it
  • 2 around the world tickets (one for me and one for their Dad)…only if hubby and I haven’t done it
  • Boxes of chocolate (hope I don’t have diabetes)
  • Pens (yes, just like my mother, I have this huge love for pens, I collect them…and pens are one of the things I might give my Mom this year)
  • My grandchildren’s drawings…(sweet, isn’t it?)
  • A beautiful family dinner…

Those might be simple but love in those gifts make them beautiful…
