This Week’s Thursday Thirteens You Need to Check out

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Jerry seemed to be able to read my mind. Her TT list is the kind of reminder I need. I’ve been so clumsy lately in the kitchen.

Well, thank you, Jerry. A very useful list you shared.

And, should you need ideas on summer activities for your kids, this is the place to go to.

For you who have doubts on whether to adopt a pet or not (I’m not talking about you, Naeva), you need to read this list.

What about you? What’s on your list?

Keep Your Baby Away from the TV

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

At Bonton.com, researchers said, “Such early exposure to screens can have a negative impact on an infant’s rapidly developing brain and put children at a higher risk for attention problems, diminished reading comprehension, and obesity.”

Based on the study, Baby E’s parents decided to keep him away from the television for a while.

What about you?

Baby Born on Delta Flight

“Two doctors on a Delta Air Lines flight from Germany delivered a baby in the aisle of the plane and resuscitated him when he wasn’t breathing, officials said.”

Your Baby’s Head Shape

Monday, May 28th, 2007

For some reasons like being born from a small maternal pelvis, moulding, or the use of ventouse or forceps during delivery, your baby’s head might be a little bit asymmetrical.
Here are some sofest positions for babies to sleep to help correct the lop-sided head shape:

  • Change sleeping direction.
  • Alternate the directions regularly, i.e. every week.
  • Hold your baby, it helps relieve pressure on the head.
  • Place your baby on his or her tummy but make sure you’re there to accompany.

Have a nice try…

Roots and Wings

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

When I first read the phrase above, I took a moment to think. And, my mind went to my parents.

They did it right.

They taught me how to be aware of who I was and how to let me be free–yet responsible.

Dad always told me stories about Grandpa and Grandma, and my great grandparents. Where they came from and everything they went through to get us all this happy. Mom did the same, too.

Without having to see my great grandparents, I feel the love inside me for them.

Dad never tried to stop me from doing anything I thought right, from going anywhere I felt like to.

And, those are the thinks that make me who I am today. And, I’m grateful.

What Parents Can Do to Help Their Late-Talker Child Speak out

Thursday, May 24th, 2007
  • Try to practice sounds like bababa or dadada again and again, children needs repetition.
  • Stimulate the sensory awareness in their mouth with varied taste of food with different temperature, flavorings, shapes and textures.
  • If your child has an oral-motor problem, try to exercise the lips by licking them
  • Get your child in front of the mirror and ask him to imitate your facial expressions
  • Put on a puppet show. Just place his favorite stuffed animals behind a couch and start the show. After a while, invite him to do the show (do not push if he doesn’t want to). He might make some sounds out of the show.
  • Sing and sing. Children love the sound of song. Try to sing some simple songs while being with him and after a while he might sing along.
  • Read books for them and make the reading interesting by making sounds.
  • Get a tape recorder. Let your child make a sound, get it recorded and let him listen to the sound he made.
  • Get some interactive toys.
  • Make a phone call and let your child say something to the person on the line.
  • Name things around you. Especially things he likes so much. For example, he like Daddy’s car, repeat the word ‘car’ to help him get used to the word.
  • Let him enjoy toothbrushing for it helps provide sensory input to the tongue, gums, lips, jaw and cheeks and stimulate muscle tone.
  • Just keep on talking…both self-talk and parallel talk. The more you talk the better his improvement of development.

Disney XD with Parental Control

Friday, May 18th, 2007

This is the answer for your fear of getting your children into trouble in the cyber world.

All this time, we’ve been deadly worried about what or who our children might find in the internet. We know that people can be anything, anyone when it comes to the internet. They might seem like nice people but then you’ll find out that they are nothing but abusers.

Well, there are also many good people on the net. Just like you and me. :)

But, still we’re worried, right?

Yet, it seems like this will end. As mentioned at mashable.com, at least, with this MySpace equivalent website for pre-teens launched by Disney, we can control the kids. Assuring that they’re safe.

If any of your pre-teens have tried this internet community of kids, you are welcome to share experiences and opinions here.
