10 Tips for Teaching Your Child the True Meaning of Christmas

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

The true meaning of Christmas is sometimes crowded out by the frenzy of buying and gift giving. Our children are assaulted on all sides by the secular version of Santa Clause and the TV commercials showing them the latest toys and games. How can we teach our children the true meaning of Christmas, without taking away all the secular revelry?

One way to do that is to celebrate Advent. Advent traditionally starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Eve. The four weeks leading up to Christmas Day is considered advent. Each week has special verses that lead to Christmas Day.

Explain to your child that the gift of the baby Jesus is why we celebrate Christmas and give gifts to others.

Keep an advent calendar and as each day goes by, celebrate that special day with a favorite Bible verse, or Christmas Carol. The countdown to Christmas is visible and the reason for Christmas is reinforced daily.

When Christmas cards begin arriving, make them into an Advent wreath and use your prayer time to pray for the senders of the cards. This can instill in a child the need to pray for others, and to thank God for the gift of friends and family.

Engage your whole family in an Advent service project. Collect money or food to give to local charities that see an increased need at this time. Call the Salvation Army for names of families who need “adopted” for the Holiday. Encourage your child to share their good fortune by giving a gift to a child who is needy. Let your child see you donate to a church’s gift giving project, or send a special package to a missionary family.

The nativity set is also an important part of Christmas traditions. Let your child help set it up and tell them stories about the animals as you set them out.

Have a craft time when all the family gets together to make a craft that will be a new ornament on the tree or a new Christmas decoration they will treasure from year to year.

Sing the Christmas carols with your children. The songs of Christmas that we grew up with are still out there for us to enjoy with our children. Take them as a group to sing carols in a nursing home. Let your child pick out a small gift to give to the grandmas and grandpas, help them to wrap it and make it special for them. Give them a sense of giving and the good feeling it provides.

On Christmas Eve, we conclude the celebration of the Advent season. Prepare a nativity play, or put on your own nativity scene complete with little angels and your family pets as part of the scenery.

Christmas Day is an important time to instill in your child the true meaning of Christmas. Start with a prayer of thanks for the most wonderful gift of all, and have each of them say a word of thanks for another family member. Instead of rushing to drag the gifts from under the tree, prayer and family time will help your child realize that Christmas is about the greatest gift of all. The birth of Jesus

Have You Checked Your Snowmobile?

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Winter is coming. There is nothing better than enjoying the snow at the mountain with you beloved snowmobile. Don’t forget to check all the parts, though, since the vehicle hasn’t been checked in almost one year. We really don’t want to meet any incidents while we are on the run. Or even worst, we also don’t want to leave the snowmobile at some service workshop while it is snowing beautifully at the mountain. Now, check out the snowmobile exhaust, suspension, engine, windshields, controls, and any other necessary parts. After all checked, we just wait, the snow will be coming soon enough.

Three Basic Steps to Holiday Stress Reduction

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

There are many great resources providing quality hints and tips to reduce holiday stress, and if you feel yourself experiencing a great deal of pressure in December, you should definitely find some of these materials and consider the myriad of great ideas to make your winters easier. In addition to the many great suggestions these sources provide, there are a few basic steps you can take to make your to-do list seem more manageable and to reduce your stress level.

Adjust Your Expectations

Some may benefit from simply readjusting their expectations of the holidays. The omnipresent media and advertising industries can lead us to believe that any holiday celebration that doesn’t end up resembling a Currier & Ives print is a failure. This, of course, is not the case. It’s fine to strive for a wonderful holiday season, but it’s not necessary to create the Perfect Holiday. Instead of concerning yourself with every Christmas detail, you can reduce your stress level by focusing on the parts of the holidays that are most meaningful and important to you and placing less emphasis on other aspects of the season.

By readjusting your expectations and goals for the holidays, you can reduce time pressures considerably. A focus on what matters most to you insures that you will not spend precious hours involving yourself in activities and projects that are really not part of your “core” holiday goals.

Start Early

We often laugh at the fact Christmas decorations tend to go up in shopping malls right after Halloween decorations disappear. Although we don’t necessarily need to take the not-so-subtle message of holiday commercialization to heart, we can learn a little bit something from the early decoration trend. By starting our holiday preparations early, we can reduce the amount of pressure and stress we experience during the holiday season.

It may seem unusual, but it really is okay to check whether or not the Christmas lights are working before the day you plan on decorating. And there’s no reason you can’t spend a little idle time in November doing a big of holiday shopping. By doing some of your “required” tasks early, you can avoid the feeling of being in a rush in late December.

Follow Santa’s Lead

Santa Claus, the song tells us, makes a list and checks it twice. If he left delivery of millions of toys up to his memory, he would probably be the North Pole’s most stressed resident. You can learn an important lesson from Santa Claus and can create your own organized list of holiday tasks and chores.

Although you may not want to over-regulate yourself, it is a good idea to make a pretty detailed list of everything you’ll need to do in preparation for the holidays. If you can produce this list early, you will be able to schedule out events in a reasonable manner, making sure you are not caught up in the hustle and bustle that makes the holidays so frustrating for some people.

The holidays can be a source of great satisfaction and enjoyment. Unfortunately, they can also become a high-pressure race for those who are not adequately prepared. By carefully assessing your holiday needs and expectations, starting early on the holidays and keeping an organized to-do list, you can make your holidays a pleasure!

It is really true, that holiday season is shopping season. Why? There are so many special offers and best deals during this season, from tv deals, fashion sale, to toys best deals. If we look further, we can see that some of those sophisticated LCD TVs can be bought at more than 50% off. Well, although most people shop during this season for getting gifts for their beloved ones, there is nothing wrong for use to make use of the season to get some things of our dreams, right? We can just consider it as gifts for ourselves.

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Have you done your Christmas shopping for the kids? If not, then do your self a favor and be done with the shopping as soon as possible. You know yourself of how hectic it is at the malls if we go there too close to Christmas day. As for the gift idea, there are a few things that can be the safest idea; that is guaranteed that the gift recipients will love them. Some are playstation 3 or any other gaming stuff for the boys, and some beautiful Barbie dolls and Barbie stuff for the girls. Do you agree with me?

What Causes Autism

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Many parents hope that in finding a source of autism, this disorder can be cured or prevented. Unfortunately, scientists have yet to find one single reason why children develop autism. It is possible that someday autism will be linked to a specific gene abnormality, but the more likely source is not one thing, but a number of factors in a child’s world. Autism cannot be prevented or cured, so the best we can do to help autistic children and adults is be understanding and willing to compromise to make the world comfortable for them and ourselves.

First off, there are certain things that do not cause autism, and these myths should be laid to rest immediately. Most importantly, bad parenting does not cause autism. In the past, mothers were blamed for traumatizing their children with cold parenting techniques, which was thought to lead to autism. This is simple not true. Autism is also not caused by malnutrition, although food allergies occur in my autistic children and some autistic children do benefit from taking daily vitamins.

There are many links between autism and the brain. Most people with autism have larger brains and they are “wired” differently than a typical brain. Differences occur in many parts of the brain, so it cannot be targeted to one specific brain malfunction overall, but rather a brain malfunction in general. Autistic children also show signs of an immune deficiency. Evidence in this study is not yet strong, but research is still being done. Many autistic individuals have other health problems related to immune deficiencies. Overall, these things all seem to point to genetics. Although autism is not the parents’ fault, it is most likely that autism was found elsewhere on your family tree, and it is not uncommon for parents to raise more than one autistic child. Autism may also be linked to vaccinations, although this is still being highly studied. The benefits of vaccinations greatly outweigh the risks of them causing autism, so you should not deprive your child simply because you are fearful. Talk to you doctor if you have concerns about vaccinations.

Nobody knows what causes autism. Therefore, we can do nothing to prevent and cure it, but rather we can simply treat the autistic people in our lives with the best of our ability. Becoming educated in autism is the key—the more you know about the disorder, the better you can help individuals who suffer from it. Autism is a complex problem, and as researchers develop new understandings of the way it affects the body, better treatment options will become available, with the hope that someday we will be able to cure this disease.

We can just go to one city, Orlando, and we can find any Disney attractions for kids of all ages. From toddlers to teens will love this place. They have it all, from Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and SeaWorld.

Protecting Our Family

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Our family is our most valuable thing in our life. There is nothing that we won’t do to protect them, keep them save, and give them only the best. The problem is that while the kids need to go home after school, we cannot always there for them, especially for family with both parents working at the same time. Although worrying is of course one of parents’ jobs, there is not point in worrying without doing something to further the family protection. One way to make sure their safety is by knowing most of our neighbors as well as keeping their contact numbers. We can regularly give them calls, just to make sure of how the kids are doing, and our neighbors will never blame us for worrying over our kids. The next way is by installing security systems; the system can monitor the house’s condition as well as give some signals when some uncommon things happen. And the next way is to try finding some trusted persons to keep the kids.

Breast Feeding: Benefits to Mothers

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Breast-feeding is good for new mothers as well as for their babies. There are no bottles to sterilize and no formula to buy, measure and mix. It may be easier for a nursing mother to lose the pounds of pregnancy as well, since nursing uses up extra calories. Lactation also stimulates the uterus to contract back to its original size.

A nursing mother is forced to get needed rest. She must sit down, put her feet up, and relax every few hours to nurse. Nursing at night is easy as well. No one has to stumble to the refrigerator for a bottle and warm it while the baby cries. If she’s lying down, a mother can doze while she nurses.

Nursing is also nature’s contraceptive–although not a very reliable one. Frequent nursing suppresses ovulation, making it less likely for a nursing mother to menstruate, ovulate, or get pregnant. There are no guarantees, however. Mothers who don’t want more children right away should use contraception even while nursing. Women who are breast-feeding can use barrier methods of birth control, such as condoms and diaphragms. Hormone-containing methods are not first choice. These include injections (such as Depo-Provera), implants (such as Norplant), and birth control pills. A woman who breast-feeds should consult her doctor about which type of contraception is appropriate for her until the baby is weaned.

Breast-feeding is economical also. Even though a nursing mother works up a big appetite and consumes extra calories, the extra food for her is less expensive than buying formula for the baby. Nursing saves money while providing the best nourishment possible.
